Sennheiser MD-421II

The MD421 II continues the tradition of the MD 421 which has been one of Sennheiser's most popular dynamic mics for over 35 years. The large diaphragm, dynamic element handles high sound pressure levels, making it a natural for recording guitars and drums. The MD 421's full-bodied cardioid pattern, and five-position bass control make it an excellent choice for most instruments, as well as group vocals, or radio broadcast announcers. One listen and you'll know why it's a classic.

Apex 460 tube condensor mic

The already popular and best selling APEX420 and APEX430 large diaphragm studio condensers have already been redefining the price / performance barrier. The new APEX460 Vacuum Tube Condenser Microphone continues this trend by raising the bar on performance while continuing to lower the price barrier for studio quality microphones. The APEX460 Tube Microphone is aggressively priced, yet superior sounding large diaphragm studio condenser capable of competing easily with much more expensive microphones in this class.

APEX460 Features
One unique feature of this microphone is the nine different selectable polar patterns easily available from the selector switch on the front panel of the external power supply. Rather than limiting the user to the three popular patterns (Omnidirectional, Cardioid, and Figure Eight pattern) most commonly available, the APEX460 has three gradient stages between each pattern. This allows the studio engineer or home recordist far more versatility. In vocal applications where an omnidirectional pattern isn't quite "fat" enough, but cardioid is too narrow, you now have three additional steps to find the right subtle mix between the two standard patterns. There are also three additional steps between cardioid and figure-8 pattern.

Improved quality in affordable recording equipment has brought serious power to the home studio enthusiast or small project studio. The microphone is the first, and often most important link in the signal chain. The APEX460 is high performance, yet truly affordable large diaphragm condenser microphone. They are an outstanding choice for the main microphone for any professional studio, home studio, or any of the computer based direct to hard drive recording systems now available.

Due to their rugged construction, high SPL handling capability and affordable price, the APEX460 is also an outstanding choice for live sound reinforcement or live recording. They have proven themselves as overhead mics for drum kits, for guitar or bass cabinets where superior sound quality and high sound pressure handling is required, or as the mic of choice for saxophones, flutes, acoustic guitars or acoustic bass where subtlety and clarity is paramount.

Vocalists can use the proximity effect to their advantage, adding fullness and more "bottom end" to the voice. Experienced vocalists can easily incorporate it part of their overall microphone technique. Again, experimentation with mic placement during the recording process is the key. The omnidirectional polar pattern does not exhibit this effect.

Crown CM-700 Condenser

The Crown® CM-700 is a cardioid condenser microphone for pro or semi-pro recording and high-quality sound reinforcement. Rugged enough for the road, the CM-700 is well suited for acoustic instruments, drum overheads and studio vocals. It works equally well for popular music (multi-miking) or classical music (stereo and spot miking). Small and inconspicuous, the CM-700 is also a good choice for miking a lectern. The microphone is also available in stereo matched pairs as the CM700MP. The CM-700 has a very smooth, wide-range frequency response which gives it a natural sound.

It preserves the delicate timbre of acoustic instruments, yet it can reproduce all the power of a pipe organ. The off-axis response is also smooth, so any leakage picked up has little coloration. Because of its cardioid pickup pattern, the CM-700 reduces background noise, room reverb and feedback. The cardioid pattern is uniform with frequency. Self-noise is very low, permitting clean, noise-free recordings. The mic can handle extremely loud sounds without distortion. It is protected against static and RFI. The output is balanced, low impedance, which allows long cable runs without hum pickup or high-frequency loss. Powering is by 12-48V phantom power.

EV-664 Vintage Dynamic

info from: http://www.coutant.org/ev664/index.html there is a link on that page to hear this mic in action.

The Electro-Voice Model 664 is a cardioid microphone of the dynamic type with only one moving element. It is designed specifically for public address applications. The cardioid pattern is obtained through use of three sound entrances located in the back of the diaphragm. These three sound entrances, each utilizing the proper acoustical impedance, combine to form one effective back entrance which varies in distance from the diaphragm inversely with frequency. The resulting phase and amplitude conditions produce a uniform cardioid pattern over a wide frequency range. This variable front-to-back distance along with dynamic-type construction affords high resistance to mechanical shock and eliminates proximity effect.

The Model 664 is an all-purpose public address microphone designed to fulfill requirements of wide-range reproduction under a great variety of conditions. Because of its excellent and uniform polar response, it is especially useful in locations where acoustic feedback, ambient noise, and severe reverberation exist. The preferred instrument for serious home and semi-professional recording, the 664 is also an ideal choice for quality sound reinforcement systems, particularly where acoustic problems exist. It is equipped with a pop-proof wire mesh grille which minimizes wind and breath blasts. The Model 664 may be used on a floor or desk stand or carried in the hand. This all-purpose microphone features the exclusive Electro-Voice Acoustalloy® diaphragm. The non-metallic diaphragm permits smooth response over a wide frequency range and withstands high humidity, temperature extremes, severe mechanical shocks, and the corrosive effects of salt air. It is practically indestructible with normal use.
